I have a copy neatly tucked away among my literary gems. This book on the mind is the foundation and lodestar of all personal growth, self-help and motivational doctrine. The front rank of self-help and management teachers, Carnegie, Rohn, Maxwell and Drucker all swear by it.
I just watched a couple of residents of a suburb of Accra on the news complaining about their sorry lot and poverty. They had been affected by the rains.
As I listened to them, I concluded that the rains are the least of their problems. Their very mental posturing is poor, and until they change their thoughts about the world and their lives, it is not going to change. Blaming the government for your personal penury does not avail.
Victor Frankl was one of millions who were tortured and imprisoned in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. As the smelting heat of the incineration chambers reached their nostrils, many died in their minds. Their bodies were empty containers merely charred to a cinder- they were already dead.
Despair closed in on Frankl, but one day in the throes of anguish, a light came on in his mind like bright fireflies in a cave. He saw it. His captors could only limit his physical liberty, but in his mind, he was free. Frankl literally meditated himself beyond the possibility of being put in the incineration chambers. Though locked in the holds, he was flying through the universe in his mind.
He was free. He potentized his thoughts and concentrated them on his freedom and the greatness that would follow. In his mind, he became a world-renowned author. He could not change his circumstances, and so he was forced to change himself. He became free and the world was changed by his writing.
I have meditated on a musical instrument I did not know how to play till I could interpret an orchestra piece on it in complete darkness. As a bass player, I have so pondered the sonority, roundness and acoustic depth of the upright bass that when I play the electric bass, the sound equipment register acoustic bass frequencies. A sound engineer was amazed by it recently.
Whether you are rich or poor, sad or happy, lonely or loved, your mind holds the key to your life. If you live in the putrid squalor of a ghetto or shanty, rise above it mentally, and in your mind, put yourself where you wish to be. Do so until it becomes a feeling of reality. I kid you not, if you go there in your mind long enough, you will follow. Protect your mind, wage war against mental weakness and ugliness. Fight the toxicity, mediocrity and negativity. He who sponsors his mind on many worthy adventures will soar over all obstacles and there at last, be found.
