The Envy of the World – Joseph Addai Kusi
There is a man in the world who is the man of the world. He lusts after personal wealth, privilege and power. He works and schemes and fights and dreams to be the king of the hill, top of the heap; the top dog. He lives in the best, flies in the best, wears the best and drives the best. He is the knight who rides a white horse and takes no prisoners. He is the ace of clubs and the king of diamonds, the Moby Dick, the white whale. He is the envy of the world.
The world is his! New York is his playground, Paris his dining table and the American Dream, his chessboard. Women want him, men want to be him. But there is still something he feels he is missing. He seeks the one thing to which he may lay claim as his Cullinan diamond. He wonders to himself what that one thing is, that adds up to makes sense of all that he has amassed for himself. What did he become the champion of the world for? How does he assure himself that he is “the man?”
There is a woman in the world who is the woman of the world. She yearns for the admiration, worship and love of the whole universe. She dances and glides and struts and enchants as queen of the world, the haughty duchess of dreams. She forbids anything to come near that is poor; she wears the best, lives in the best and dines and wines with the best.
She is the prima donna, the gleaming sapphire, the queen of hearts, the diva who, bejewelled in ermine and pearls, enters the banquet last. She gets the best seats, or is with those who gets the best seats at the balls, the concerts and shows. Diamonds are her best friend.
The world falls at her feet. She is the marchioness of Venice. Monaco is her parlour and Rome her salon. She is Helen of Troy, the face that sailed a thousand ships and burned the topless towers of Ilium. Her body is a temple of desire; men want her, women want to be her. She flaunts her lips, her hips and her curves, embraced by velvet gowns, as a showpiece. She is the envy of the world.
But she finds herself unsatisfied; she wants more. Where may she find the one thing that will crown her as the goddess she lusts to be? She wants to leave no doubt; how can she be the one who surpasses Venus in brightness? What is the answer to this desire in her that silk and pearls cannot give?
The man who is the envy of the world decides that his crown must be the woman who is the envy of the world. He determines that there must be such a woman in the world who is the reason for his dollar and glamour.
The woman also vows that only such a man can win a woman as enchanting as she, as his trophy. And so as if by a sacred geometry of chance, they choose each other as dancing partner and waltz away, like the spinning of the gambling wheel, each assured they have won a fortune. A dalliance begins.
But they are both disappointed; the self-assured rooster and the haughty peacock hardly ever make a successful alliance. They find that their lust to drink the wine of desire from the voluptuous chalice of pleasure, of each other, is instead offered a bitter potion of slimy gall.
Each finds that the other is a mannequin; a well-decorated lie; vanity upon vanity it all is. So each decides that they are better off being the envy of the world on their own. Also Read “The Difference Between Envy and Jealousy”
